If, like us, you had visions of African beaches and Shanghai sunsets dancing in your heads this holiday season, then consider those visions realized—virtually at least. In our second installment of holiday travel diaries, some of our favorite adventurers share pictures from their enviable winter vacations. Biking along beaches, touring temples—and meeting an elephant!—were all on the itinerary for art director Sofía Sánchez Barrenechea, while entrepreneur Hannah Bronfman and vbeauté founder Julie Macklowe both made the proverbial (but enviable) pilgrimage to St. Barth’s. Vogue.com Contributing PhotographerClaiborne Swanson Frank opted to take it easy in sunny Naples, Florida, a trip surrounded by family and topped off with a decadent birthday cake, but it was back to the ranch (and back in the saddle again) for Vênsette founder Lauren Remington Platt,
who rediscovered her love of horseback riding at Canyon Ranch in Arizona. And although Ruby Kobo jewelry designer Yuvi Alpert may have taken the last plane there, he was in no hurry to say goodbye to the beautiful villages and coasts of Cape Town. We can’t say we blame him. See all their photos in the slideshow above, and for more,The sun setting on Christmas Eve in Naples, Florida. Watching the sunset is a ritual for my family. We try to get in as many sunsets as we can, and Naples has some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seenOur Christmas Eve table on our deck at home. My mother has a gift—she can set the most magical tables. In my eyes, it’s an art form; they’re so beautiful. She pours so much love and thought into decorating them, and they make each holiday unique and special.Mornings began with a 7:00 a.m. hike in the towering Santa Catalina Mountains. By our return midday, sweaters and gloves were taken off and replaced with a light tan.Canyon Ranch’s literature states that it’s more than a place, it’s a state of mind. While the trip was completely relaxing, unfortunately, this is the closest I got to a yoga pose.I grew up on a horse farm, but I rarely have time to ride anymore. I was thrilled to be able to do so on this trip! This shirt was my grandfather’s and is Gucci from the 70s. I have literally worn it to shreds. Here I am inside a makeshift tepee strewn with pieces of paper containing wishes and prayer beads made of colorful twine thrown by passing travelers.
After playing on the beach and some fun lunches, we braved the rough passage and steamed on to St. Barth’s, where we remained for the duration of our trip. Massive super yachts abound and are quite a juxtaposition against the lush hills that rise from Gustavia harbor. (Mental note: Next year, get a boat with a helicopter!) Mornings were spent on the paddle board, and swimming for exercise with quiet beach walks in the sublime coves nearby.
Enjoying the views en route to Lamu Island, from the windows of a ten-passenger plane. I was on the last flight there: NYC to London to Nairobi to, finally, Lamu Island! A jewelry designer I met in Shela Village—too bad I wasn’t wearing any of my pieces to show him as well. The African penguins in Simon’s Town, Cape Town My brothers and I enjoying the long sunny days in Cape Town. Lunch at Hotel Isle de France with the family. A view of the harbor on the way to Gustavia. Long lunches catered by Maya’s restaurant everyday. The best! Eden Rock at sunset.
