The winter season is coming soon, and so people all over the world will start looking longingly at maps as they seek for somewhere warm to plot their next holiday. If summer is the time to explore the beauty around you, winter is the time to bust out and get to warmer climes. Andalucía in the south of Spain is a great place for these wintery respites, especially as it has some of the warmest summers in Europe with average temperatures of 17 degrees Celsius between December and February.
Holidays to this part of the world generally involve sitting on a beach and getting some sun, yet there are lots of adventurous things to do here as well. So if you hop on a cheap flight to Malaga be sure to bring your hiking boots!
If you move away from the beaches, you will discover a set of gorgeous rural landscapes in Andalucía that are great for hiking. One of the best places to start is the “Walk of the Forgotten Hamlet” in Sierra de Aracena. This trek links two incredibly pretty villages via a peaceful and reasonable gentle path. The countryside is absolutely beautiful here, so you will need to bring a camera.
Mountain biking is also very popular here, and it is a slightly more exhilarating way to explore the countryside. Some of the best trails can be found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, though it is best to go with a tour guide. There are no well-defined trails, so local knowledge is crucial.
Unsurprisingly, Andalucía also has an array of places to rock climb. This climbing is for experienced people only, yet there are lessons and guides for beginners. There are plenty of fun crags to the north and east of Malaga. The highlight for any climber is the chance to tackle El Chorro, a famous limestone gorge which is also a worthwhile visit for hikers and mountain bikers.
So if you want to get away, but also have some adventures, why not check out Andalucía? With warm weather and great places for outdoor pursuits, it is a lovely place to spend a few weeks during the winter.
